Dead dolphin found on El Playazo beach - 17th Oct 2012
This weekend a dead dolphin was discovered on El Playazo beach by walkers. There were no obvious external injuries to the young female dolphin however there were bloodstains in and around its mouth. It is believed that she had been separated from the herd during its passage along the coast in Nerja and ended up beaching herself on the eastern edge of Playazo.
Nerja seeks greater freedom for business opening hours - 15th Oct 2012
The Town Hall has applied for Nerja to be declared a Municipality of Great Tourist Influx in a move strongly supported by business leaders. If the Department of Tourism and Commerce agree with the move it would mean greater freedom regarding opening hours during Easter and the summer months, seen as vital during these times of crisis.
Local businesses have natural park in their sights - 15th Oct 2012
The Association for Nerja's business community have shown concern regarding the state of the Natural Park of the Sierra de Almijara, Tejeda and Alhama. Amongst the issues as outlined in a letter sent to the National Parks director is the current lack of a guide to the parks tracks and the lack of signs for available routes. Local business leaders argue that every effort must be made to improve the parks accessibility to tourists for the benefit of the town whilst safeguarding the areas habitats and natural beauty.
The Nerja museum hosts an exhibition on 'La ermita de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias' - 12th Oct 2012
The exhibition hall at the Nerja museum has opened an exhibition covering the history of 'La ermita de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias', coinciding with the release of a book written by Francisco Capella on the same subject. The exhibition includes a number of images highlighting some of the most interesting aspects of the chapel and will be open to the public until 18th November.
Antonio Cortes kicks off the Feria - 11th Oct 2012
This years feria has officially begun with the first days events culminating in the procession to return the image of 'Nuestra Señora de las Angustias' to her chapel and election of the Queen and Caballero of the 2012 feria in a gala held in the official Caseta in Los Huertos. As part of the gala there were performances from Máximo Perlanga, Sondelarte and Christian Callejón.
Nerja set to pucker up - 10th Oct 2012
Councillor for Culture, Gema Garcia has announced that Nerja is set to participate in the Collection of Kisses project. On the Balcón de Europa this 13th October a 'Magic Cube' will be put up where the organizers invite locals and tourists to be photographed kissing family and friends for what they hope will be the largest collection of kiss related images in the world. The photographs will be exhibited on the projects website and in a travelling exhibition.
New book about 'La Ermita de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias' - 10th Oct 2012
The Nerja museum is now offering a new book covering the history of the 'La Ermita' and the work to restore the paintings and murals that decorate its interior walls. The book entitled 'La Ermita de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias de Nerja y sus pinturas murales' has been written by Dr of Art History, Francisco Capilla Luque and the art restorer Estrella Arcos von Haartman. The book costs 10 euros and is now available.
Annual fishing competition - 9th Oct 2012
Around sixty people took part in this years fishing competition held just of Playazo beach last Saturday 6th October. The annual event organized by the 'Club Náutico Nerja' and traditionally held just before the Feria, included some 20 vessels with the winning boat, Boira I, catching an impressive 32kg of fish.
All are invited to the horse drawn carriage competition - 8th Oct 2012
The League of 'Enganches' of Malaga comes once again to Nerja in an event to be held on 12th October next to the industrial estate 'Castillo Alto'. The competition tests the ability of drivers of horse drawn carriages with some 35 carriages expected to be on show. The organizers wish to invite tourists and locals alike the this increasingly popular spectacle.
Two concerts in the Nerja Caves for the Feria - 8th Oct 2012
To mark the occasion of the Nerja Feria 2012 the Nerja Caves will be holding two truly international concerts with the German choir 'Mucher Konzertgemeinschaft' performing on 11th October at 5pm and the Japanese choir 'Yamanami' on 13th October also at 5pm.
Water treatment plant another step closer - 6th Oct 2012
Nerja's mayor, José Alberto Armijo, has travelled to Madrid for talks regarding the construction of the towns long overdue water treatment plant. The project has been awarded to the Joint Venture of Isolux-Corsan-Corviam who offered the best proposal for the building of the plant. Upon completion of the necessary paperwork making the decision official, the Joint Venture will have three months to submit final drafts for technical approval allowing work to begin.
Local officials meet with the towns Business Association - 5th Oct 2012
Mayor José Alberto Armijo, local councillors and Partido Popular representatives have met this week with the Business Association of Nerja to discuss the development of local projects and initiatives. Top of the agenda were Nerja's long awaited water treatment plant and the proposed Paseo Maritimo for El Playazo. The meeting also discussed the future of the Paseo de los Carabineros, the proposed marina and the towns golf course.
