Nerja Tourist Day - 3rd Sep 2012
This Wednesday, September 5, Nerja celebrates again its Tourist Day with events and music with this years 'Honorary Tourist' being the singer Pastora Soler, Spains last representative at the Eurovision Song Contest. Events are held throughout the day although be sure not to miss the music and dancing starting from 8pm on the Balcón de Europa.
Maro feria from 7th to 9th September - 3rd Sep 2012
Maro is almost ready to celebrate its yearly feria in honor of the Virgen de las Maravillas, to be held from 7th to 9th September. Attractions will be running on the 6th however these are available for children and therefore at half the usual price. Festivities officially begin from 1pm on the 7th September in la Plaza de las Maravillas.
Town Hall opening hours extended - 1st Sep 2012
As of the 1st Septemeber Town Hall opening hours will be extended by half an hour each working day. The measure means that town hall officials will now work for 37.5 hours per week in accordance with new guidelines put into place by national government. The Town Hall will now be active from 7:45am until 3:15pm with public opening hours of 7:45am unitl 2:15pm.
A Botanical Garden for La Torrecilla? - 30th Aug 2012
The town hall plans to ask the coastal authorities for the necessary permissions to create a new botanical garden in the area of La Torrecilla with the aim of protecting the future of the towns local flora as well as promoting ecotourism. The new feature would be know as âAcantilados del Mar de Alborán' or 'Alboran Sea Cliffs' in English.
Museum of Nerja exhibits collection of Russian icons - 29th Aug 2012
From the 5th until the 28th September, the Museum of Nerja will be exhibiting a collection of Russian icons dating from the sixteenth century up until the nineteenth century. The collection consists of 58 pieces dealing with biblical scenes, depictions of saints and the virgin and will be on loan from the Faustino Orbegozo Eizaguirre foundation.
Winter Concert in Burriana - 27th Aug 2012
The concert organized by the Department of Youth will be held on the evening of the 31st August on Burriana beach starting from 10pm. This years party is taking on a retro theme with music from the 70's and 80's. Party go'ers are encouraged to dress appropriately so you can dust off your flares and shoulder pads with a prize being awarded for the best dressed!
New Beyonce inspired musical arrives at the Cultural Centre - 27th Aug 2012
The 'Beyoncé Experience', will be staged at the Villa de Nerja Cultural Centre on Friday 31st starting at 9pm. With some 16 dancers performing to a selection of 22 songs from throughout the singers career the evening promises to be just as entertaining if not more so than last years musical Burlesque show. Tickets are now available at a cost of 5 euros.
Child hospitalized after falling from a zodiac leaves the Pediatric unit - 24th Aug 2012
The 12-year-old local youth who in early August was the victim of a serious accident close to Maro beach has left the specialist pediatric unit but still remains in a critical condition and will have to undergo several operations as a result of his injuries.
The boy who is a resident of Nerja, was injured when he tried to get on board a zodiac but ended up falling onto the propeller of the boat, causing injuries to his arms, legs and head.
Studies continue to determine whether the paintings in the Nerja Caves are the oldest ever found - 23rd Aug 2012
A group of five researchers from the French cave of Chauvet are analyzing samples of coal and calcite taken from the Nerja Caves in early August to date conclusively the age of the paintings found inside, a process which will take some six months. The process is âslow but sureâ and will tell us if these paintings are indeed the work of Homo Neandertalensis making them the oldest paintings discovered to date.
The Junta de Andalusia has also announced that it has authorised further archaeological work to be carried out in October.
The City Council will plans repairs to El Barco de Chanquete after the summer - 22nd Aug 2012
It is one of the most visited and photographed monuments in the municipality however most foreigners are none the wiser. El Barco de Chanquete found in El Parque Verano Azul named after the TV series in which the boat featured will be repaired at the end of the summer. This will not be a total repair however it will deal with the most urgent issues faced by the attraction and will put it in good stead for the future. The boat featured in the TV series Verano Azul filmed in Nerja which was first aired in 1981. The TV series has been re-run almost every year since and is known and loved by generations of viewers.
Ana MartÃn exhibits her work - 20th Aug 2012
The local artist Ana Martin currently has an exhibition of paintings entitled 'oils and watercolors' open to the public in the Calle Cristo Municipal Hall up until the 31st August. Ana Martin has exhibited her work both nationally and internationally in cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Florence and New York.
You can visit the exhibition from 11am until 2pm and then from 7:30 until 10:30pm.
Another successful White Party - 16th Aug 2012
Tuesdays White Party proved to be its usual yearly success with thousands of people turning out. The event, organized by the youth department of the city council brought together locals and tourists alike on El Salón beach on Tuesday night / Wednesday morning with the free non-alcoholic cocktails provided by the organizers gone by twelve o'clock! Party go'ers enjoyed music provided by DJ's Miguel Picasso, José MarÃa Albalá and David Sulihvan during a good natured night with no major incidents.
