Maroween approaches - 24th Oct 2014
The program for this years chestnut and sweet potato festival, known locally as Maroween, was unveiled today by the organizers in conjunction with members of the local authority. In a change to previous years this edition will span three days starting on the 31st of October and continuing until the 2nd of November. Among the various activities that will be taking place throughout the weekend, you'll find an open air market, tapas route and numerous performances by local groups in the evening. River works near completion - 22nd Oct 2014
Nerja's councilor for the environment, Nieves Atencia, has announced that the work to clear the mouth of the Rio Chillar ready for the winter rains is in its finishing stages and that soon work will begin on the Rio Seco. This task has turned into yet another bone of contention between the local authority and the Junta de Andalucia owing to the fact that some areas of the river fall under the responsibility of the Junta who are apparently neglecting their obligations, forcing the town hall to make up the shortfall. The councilor was very clear in the fact that Nerja's town hall will pursue reimbursement for the extra work it has been forced to pay for, which now totals some €15,000.
Tutti Frutti residents make official complaints - 21st Oct 2014
Following complaints from residents overlooking Tutti Frutti square the future of the outdoor terraces belonging to and operated by many of the bars appears to be in doubt. The outdoor areas are considered to be an important area of income for not only the establishments themselves but also for the town however that could soon change with provincial laws forcing the town hall to take action. Interested parties have already begun to look for ways around the situation but if no way can be found it will likely mean an end to Nerja's outdoor nightlife.
Caves full for anniversary concert - 20th Oct 2014
Last Saturday evening a special concert was held at the Nerja Caves as part of the celebrations marking the 55th anniversary of their discovery. The concert was held 55 years to the day after the Malaga symphonic orchestra first played a selection of music in the caverns and was an event that many members of the Nerja Caves Foundation were very keen to recreate. The concert proved extremely popular, with a full house as the performance began and many relatives of the musicians from the original orchestra attending.
Costal walkway set to benefit Nerja - 17th Oct 2014
ElÃas Bendodo, president of the Malaga municipal council, has today made public the findings of a study into the 180km coastal walkway which will join Nerja to Manilva, near Estepona. He did so during a meeting of officials including representatives of the 14 coastal municipalities which will benefit from the project as well as officials from the Junta de AndalucÃa and coastal agency. The study predicted that the project, whereby existing paths are interlinked to provide a continuous route, would add €40 million to the local economy and create 270 sustainable tourism based jobs as well as 130 construction roles over the five year execution period. The study also showed that with a project budget of €30 million the costs would be covered by increased tourism activity within the first two years of operation. With the construction work already underway in numerous locations along the coast and soon to start in others Bendodo stressed that this is no longer a proposal but a reality meaning that soon it will be possible to walk from the Balcon de Europa to Puerto de la Duquesa, Manilva along a single coastal path.
Basketball tournament this weekend - 16th Oct 2014
This weekend Nerja's indoor sports hall will play host to the first Andalusian Federation basketball cup with matches being played on both Friday and Saturday. Various clubs from the area will be involved, including the Nerja club, in a tournament which is expected to see some of the best basketball action from the province. Sports councillor Antonio Garcia thanked the organisers for choosing Nerja as the location for the first edition of this competition and wished the competing teams well.
Encouraging hotel occupancy over the feria period - 15th Oct 2014
According to figures released by the regional tourism authority Nerja hotels registered an average occupancy rate of 96% during the feria period with some reaching full capacity. The local tourist office located near the Balcon de Europa also recorded nearly 1,500 enquiries over the same period with British visitors being the largest single group accounting for nearly one third of the enquiries and Spanish nationals close behind in second place.
Nerja's annual feria comes to an end - 14th Oct 2014
Councillor José Miguel GarcÃa, principal official in charge of the feria, has thanked the residents of Nerja for their support over the five days of this year's event, making particular reference to the high levels of attendance at the various concerts and shows in the two town hall marquees at the main fairground. He remarked that this year's festival went largely without incident with the local authorities taking action on just a handful of occasions against individuals for drug and anti-social behaviour offences. The day fair at Plaza Tutti Frutti ran particularly smoothly this year with not a single incident being registered by the local police and the medical services stationed at the fairground were rarely called upon with only one individual requiring the use of the ambulance.
Calle Nueva Orquesta kicks off the Feria - 10th Oct 2014
This years feria is now underway following the opening concert by the Calle Nueva Orquesta outside the town hall last night. The group made up of numerous Nerja musical veterans, played a diverse selection of music ranging from national artists such as Dúo Dinámico and Roberto Carlos to the ever popular James Brown. Hundreds of people turned up to see the opening event which ended with the turning on of the feria lights, both at the town hall and at the fairground, by group member Pepe Millón.
Taller de la Amistad receives donation - 9th Oct 2014
Guillermo Som along with local councillor Gema Garcia today presented a cheque for €1,600 to local charity "El Taller de la Amistad" following a highly successful exhibition of his work in the Calle Cristo municipal hall. The photographer, who sold 93 photos from his collection explained that he still has photos for sale, available online until the 15th of November and that hopefully he'll be able to add to this donation in coming weeks. Antonio Contreras accepted the cheque on behalf of the charity which aims to provided support to both physically and mentally handicapped residents of Nerja.
Local authorities prepare for feria - 7th Oct 2014
The heads of the local emergency services have met today with local councillors to finalise the planning for the coming feria week. José Miguel GarcÃa, the councillor overseeing the planning for the event, explained that the main police presence will be seen in the evening with six patrols located in and around the fairground, working alongside local organisers and civilian officers. The fairground will also be covered by an on-site medical unit including ambulance and an emergency telephone number ( 670004909 ) which can be used in the event of any incidents. Following a final inspection of the rides and various stands by the local authorities on Wednesday morning to check safety standards are being met the fairground will be set for the opening of the feria 2014 on Thursday night.
Jim Ryan book launch - 6th Oct 2014
Last Friday a new book by local ex-pat Jim Ryan was launched in the Cultural Centre in Calle Granada. The book, entitled "The mountains of Nerja", is a guide to twenty three hiking routes of varying difficulty through the nearby natural parks as well as information about the flora and fauna indigenous to the area. The book, written in English will be available for purchase in England, Ireland and Spain with the profits generously being donated to the cancer charity, Cudeca.
