As well as the main event various other races will be taking place over various distances.
Town hall begins river clearing - 1st Oct 2014
A town hall representative has announced that work has begun on clearing vegetation and other obstructions from the river Chillar in preparation for the winter rains. The local authority has begun this process in the areas close to the river mouth which lie directly under its jurisdiction as well as further inland despite this task being the responsibility of the regional authority, the Junta de AndalucÃa, which has ignored repeated requests to rectify the situation. Once the work is completed on the Rio Chillar it will then begin on the Rio Seco.

Last night José Miguel GarcÃa, town councillor with primary responsibility for the annual feria, opened a photo exhibition of the contestants for this year's Feria Queen and Feria Caballero (Gentleman) competitions. He was joined by last year's winners, Naila GarcÃa and Antonio López in a ribbon cutting ceremony outside of the Sala Mercado exhibition hall. Numerous people turned up to the opening of the exhibition which will be open until the 8th of October, the night before the Gala when the winners will be announced.
Virgin moved in feria preparations - 29th Sep 2014
In readiness for the forthcoming Feria celebrations last Saturday the image of the Virgin of Anguish (one of the town's patron saints) was moved in a small procession from her chapel in Plaza la Ermita to El Salvador church near the Balcon de Europa. The image was accompanied by the town's municipal band as well as numerous residents although not, as is customary, by the image of Saint Michael due to fears over rain. The Virgin will remain in the church until the 10th of October when she is returned to her chapel in the main procession of the feria week.
Volunteers remove 700 Kilos of rubbish - 26th Sep 2014
Last weekend's post-summer Rio Chillar cleaning proved to be highly effective with over 700 kilos of rubbish collected from the banks of the river and surrounding areas. A numerous group of nature lovers gathered on Sunday morning, aged from 5 to 70 years old, to take part in the 4th such event to take place since 2011. The river has become an increasingly popular place to visit for tourists in recent years, leading to ever increasing amounts of litter left by the not so environmentally conscious. The amount of rubbish removed this weekend alongside general concerns about the issue have led Nieves Atencia, Nerja councillor with responsibility for the environment, to propose controlling the numbers of tourists who can visit the river during peak times. The motion will be debated in the coming weeks.
Safety concerns close coastal walkway - 25th Sep 2014
Due to concerns over safety the short walkway immediately below the Balcon de Europa which joins Calahonda and Caletilla beaches was closed today following a small landslide. Material from the Balcon's lower platform came loose falling to the path below, an area well used by tourists. The obvious hazard to the public led to local firemen, police and municipal technicians being called to ascertain what risk of further landslides still remained. Upon close inspection it was decided that the area should be closed to the public until repairs can be made.
New funding for Nerja's beaches - 24th Sep 2014
Nerja is set to receive new funds to improve beach equipment thanks to an agreement between the Malaga provincial council and an organisation representing the municipalities of the Axarquia region. Nerja mayor, José Alberto Armijo, made the announcement earlier today explaining that €135,000 is to be made available to improve facilities on the town's beaches. This would include things such as toilets, showers and beach access. The total investment throughout the Axarquia comes to €750,000 with Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez Málaga, Algarrobo, Torrox and Nerja all receiving funding.
Town hall requests urgent river maintenance - 23rd Sep 2014
Nerja town hall has made an official request to the Junta de Andalusia for it to pay urgent attention to the state of the municipality's rivers ahead of the winter rains. Concerns are centred around the rivers Chillar and Seco which require cleaning to avoid flooding during heavy downpours. Last year, despite a similar request, the local council had to organise and pay for the rivers to be cleaned itself, despite the legal responsibility clearly lying with the Junta. A town hall representative highlighted that this apparent neglect by the Junta left the local authority with an unexpected bill of some €9,000.
Burriana car park nearing completion - 22nd Sep 2014
Today, town mayor José Alberto Armijo and councillor for infrastructure, Antonio GarcÃa have visited the new subterranean car park near Burriana beach which has been under construction since early May. The three story car park which will have space for 257 vehicles is now structurally complete with the final phase of works now underway, meaning that the €2.5 million project will be completed and open to the public early next year. The addition of this car park will bring the total number of public underground spaces in the town to 1,400.

Busy summer for Nerja's beaches - 18th Sep 2014
Nieves Atencia, local councillor with responsibility for the municipality's beaches, today highlighted the efforts of the towns lifeguard service over the summer period by releasing figures related their work. The figures showed that the service provided medical assistance on 709 occasions treating typical seaside problems such as jellyfish stings, sunburn and other minor injuries. The statistics also clearly showed however the wide range of functions that the service fulfils during the towns busiest time of the year, with the lifeguards helping swimmers in trouble but also helping find lost children, assisting the disabled, finding lost objects and even aiding the police in reporting badly and illegally parked vehicles. As a result Nieves Atencia along with police chief Antonio Navas publicly thanked the service for its efforts over the summer.
