Streets of Maro take on a ghoulish feel - 1st Nov 2013

Maro celebrated its chestnut and sweet potato festival last night with lots of people turning out in Halloween dress for the Maroween celebration. The village square, decorated by students from the Escuela Taller and other local groups played host to live music and competitions for best costume.

Town Hall chases 2014 funds - 31st Oct 2013

A motion has been presented by Nerja's governing political party chasing funding from the Junta de Andalucia for a number of notably delayed projects that remain outstanding in the municipality. Local councilors are seeking to secure the funds before the 2014 budget allocation is set for the new health centre, fire service park and training and employment centre. €30 million are currently awaiting allocation for projects within Andalucia.

Water treatment plant remains on course - 30th Oct 2013

The bureaucratic process surrounding the new water treatment plant continues to tick over with yet more signatures being put to paper this week on documents verifying the readiness for construction. The mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, explained that this basically means, officially at least, that there are no further obstacles to the project going ahead. Despite this latest step forward there still remain a number of administrative hurdles to clear until work can actually begin although the project remains on target for this to be in December this year.

CAS dog show proves popular - 26th Oct 2013

70 dogs took part in this year's dog show organized by the animal charity C.A.S in collaboration with the town hall. Inocencia Quintero, councillor for residents, highlighted the continuing work that the organisation does in Nerja rescuing and eventually rehoming abandoned dogs both here and outside of Spain. Many nationalities took part in the event with funds raised going to the ongoing efforts of the charity.

Good summer for the Costa del Sol and Nerja - 24th Oct 2013

According to figures released by the Spanish National Institute of Statistics the Costa del Sol showed a 4.21% increase in hotel visits this past summer season, the largest increase of any tourist destination in Spain coming ahead of the Costa de la Luz, Costa Blanca and Fuerteventura. Nerja contributed significantly to this success with an 11.31% increase in hotel stays within the municipality, a figure that was only bettered by Fuengirola.

Maro prepares for Maroween - 23rd Oct 2013

The neighbouring village of Maro is preparing for its annual chestnut and sweet potato festival which is locally known as Maroween. Coinciding with Halloween the festival takes on a ghoulish feel with work already under way to give the village square the right atmosphere for such an occasion. The mayor, Javier López, has invited everybody to the festival on the 31st October from 7pm.

Picasso posters in Nerja - 22nd Oct 2013

Any fans of Picasso in Nerja will be pleased to know that a collection of 59 posters created by the artist to promote his exhibitions around the world are currently on display at the Sala Mercado and will be open until the 15th of November. You can go along to see the collection, which is touring the region, in the morning from 11am until 1:30pm and in the afternoon from 5pm until 7pm. The exhibit is also open on Saturday mornings and is free to enter.

4x4 enthusiasts meet in Nerja - 18th Oct 2013

The Nerja 4x4 Hobby Club is celebrating its 20th anniversary this weekend with an organised meet for members and enthusiasts. On both Saturday and Sunday there will be activities with a BBQ at El Pinarillo on Saturday evening and various 4x4 trials on Sunday. The club will meet with their vehicles tomorrow evening at 6pm at the market site and from 8pm head into the hills of the Natural park.

Final approval received for water treatment plant - 17th Oct 2013

Another milestone has been reached in the long running saga of the much needed water treatment works with the mayor, José Alberto Armijo, announcing that the general waters authority has now given final approval to the project. Following earlier meetings held in Madrid at the ministry for the environment it's hoped that work may begin on the €23 million project before the end of the year.

New cycle lane for Nerja? - 16th Oct 2013

Antonio García, councillor for infrastructure, has announced that the Nerja town hall has proposed a new Nerja - Maro cycle lane to the Malaga Council for development and housing as part of the 'Ciudad Amable' program. The proposal was well received and will now be evaluated by the council for its merits. Should the project be favoured over the 14 other proposals put forward, Nerja will receive a grant for the cycle paths development.

Feria was a great success - 15th Oct 2013

José Miguel García, one of the figureheads for the organisation of the Nerja Feria has remarked on how smoothly this year's feria has gone with a lack of incidents for local police to deal with. The feria was very well attended with concerts frequently packed and visitors seemingly not wanting it to end with the closing being postponed by two hours on Sunday night due to public demand.

Burriana car park one step closer - 14th Oct 2013

In a ceremony attended by the mayor and various other councillors, politicians and business groups the first stone has been put into place for the new subterranean car park in the Burriana area of Nerja. The new facility will have space for 250 vehicles providing much needed parking during the summer months. The €3 million project will be completed within a year and will result in the fourth underground car park in the municipality.
