Nerja athletics club reaches national top ten - 16th Nov 2016
This week the Spanish Athletics Federation published its rankings of the top clubs in Spain, based on results of individual athletes in ranking events. Amongst some of the most highly prestigious clubs in the country Nerja featured in seventh place, the only club which was not from a provincial capital and the only club to have fielded a presence in all competitions. This years success has been put down to the high membership numbers of the club with strong athletes in all age categories meaning great internal competition and depth allowing Nerja to send a strong group of athletes to any ranking event.
Local shops join black Friday sales - 14th Nov 2016
From Friday next week Nerja's shops associated with the Nerja Centro initiative will take part in the Black Friday sale. The annual sale which has become increasingly widespread in recent years is an American import, usually taking place on a single day, whereby retailers offer large discounts on a variety of products. The stores taking part in Nerja will begin their sale on Friday the 24th and continue through the weekend with the sale finishing on Sunday. Look for stores displaying the Nerja Centro logo!
Ruta 340 celebrates its 10th anniversary - 11th Nov 2016
The well known Ruta 340 bikers shop will be celebrating its 10th birthday this weekend with one of it's regular biker meet-ups outside its premises in Torrox Costa. On Sunday morning participants will arrive on all makes and models of motorbike for a look at each others machines and a live open air concert by the group Little Less. As usual as part of the event the organisers will sponsor a good cause which on this occasion is a collection for a wheel chair for a local resident in need of help. Those who sign up to attend get three beers on the house, an event t-shirt and a ticket for the meet ups raffle.
Jazz meets Flamenco - 9th Nov 2016
This weekend the Nerja Cultural Centre will play host to a performance of international musicians whose passion for Jazz and Flamenco has lead them to mix the two. Bego Salazar, Rycardo Moreno, David Mesa, Johnny Serrano and David Bao will give a concert on Saturday evening from 9pm guiding the audience through some of their favourite pieces whilst also throwing in a few Bossa Novas for good measure. Tickets are available from the centres ticket office and cost €10.
Nerja bike race finalises regional championship - 7th Nov 2016
The 18th Málaga provincial mountain bike championship came to an end yesterday with the final race of the year being held in Nerja. The Maratón Villa de Nerja which is now in its 3rd year attracted over 150 competitors to the streets of the municipality before leading off into the nearby Sierra Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama mountain ranges. The race set off from the Verano Azul park and continued over a 65km route reaching 1600m above sea level at its highest point before descending back to the town for the finish. Amongst the riders local residents Lucas Agustín Pereira and Francisco Lopez Redondo stood out finishing first and sixth in their respective age categories.
New success for X-bike cycle school - 2nd Nov 2016
Last weekend Vélez-Málaga once again hosted the punishing "Desafío del Buda by Xterra" cycle race in which Nerja's local cycle school enjoyed great success. Lucas Pereira of the X-Bike school took the third overall spot on the podium and top spot amongst the junior category after competing in the 72km long race along mountain paths, dry river beds and step hillside slopes. The race passed through Vélez-Málaga, Arenas, La Viñuela and Benamocarra before reaching the end with Antonio Ortiz winning the men's event and Elena Pérez the women's.
Guardia Civil arrests scammers - 31st Oct 2016
Last month officers from Nerja detained five individuals and took action against two others in connection with a series of deceptions carried out in various municipalities of the Axarquia. The group was carrying out the well known gas revision scam whereby they insist that an inspection of the gas installation is legally required presenting the owner with a bill at the end, frequently at an exorbitant price. The groups principle targets were elderly foreign residents with victims in Nerja, Torrox, Frigiliana and other municipalities coming forward. Various charges were brought against the seven individuals relating to fraud, threatening behaviour and falsification of documents.
Local businesses hold council to account - 27th Oct 2016
Representatives of the Nerja business association have formerly written to the towns mayoress Rosa Arrabal in recent days voicing concerns over the long delays members are experiencing with the councils urban department. The department, which is directly overseen by the mayoress has been described as a "serious obstacle to the business activities of the associations members" with delays of up to 15 months in the resolution of various license applications and planning decisions. In the letter the association calls for a "simple, efficient and reasonable" urban policy which is "at the service of all local residents".
Maro prepares for Maroween - 25th Oct 2016
Next Monday the neighbouring village of Maro will be holding its annual chestnut and sweet potato festival known locally as Maroween. On the 31st of October the village square will become the centre of activities for the evening which crosses a traditional local festival with Halloween meaning ghoulish costumes, house of horror, live music and free sweet potatoes and chestnuts all come together in one place! Activities kick off from 5pm until late and continue into Tuesday. You can get more information from the local tourist office near the Balcón de Europa.
Farmers can now sell directly to consumers - 20th Oct 2016
Thanks to a new law passed by the Junta de Andalusia farmers in the region are now allowed to sell up to 10% of their produce directly to consumers. Carmen Ortiz, local councillor for agriculture, fishing and rural development explained that the law provided legal cover for a traditional system that already exists in the region. The law, which was increasingly called for by organic producers in Andalusia, means that growers can sell in typical places like local markets and small stores but also to restaurants and bars.
4x4 enthusiasts meet up this weekend - 18th Oct 2016
This weekend off road enthusiasts from Nerja and neighbouring municipalities will gather together for a 4x4 meet-up on the outskirts of the town. The activities cover two days with the drivers signing up and taking part in the night time trials on Saturday and then on Sunday taking part in further competitions with vehicles divided into three categories (series, modified and prototypes) followed by the awarding of prizes and a late lunch for participants. Restoration work for oldest resident - 14th Oct 2016
Work has begun on the skeleton of a young 20 something girl discovered in 1982 in the network of caverns that make up the Nerja Caves. The skeleton known locally as "Pepita" is thought to be between 10 and 20 thousand years old, dating from the Epipaleolithic era. The restoration treatment which has been authorised by the cultural council of the Junta de Andalucia is being carried out by Rafael Ruiz de la Linde and will see previous protective resins removed from the skeleton and replaced with more modern and effective alternatives.
