National ballet pull out of dance festival performance - 14th Jul 2016
In a change to the program of this years Nerja Caves music and dance festival it was announced today that the flamenco dance company of Susana Lupiáñez would replace the Spanish National Ballet in this Saturdays open air performance in Plaza de España. The change comes due to circumstances beyond the control of the Caves foundation which organises the annual event but does mean that residents and visitors can see the company's latest production "Mudanza" which was recently premiered last month at the Madrid Flamenco Festival. The production includes a number of invited artists and will begin from 11pm on Saturday evening.
Fireball over the Costa del Sol - 11th Jul 2016
The Costa del Sol was the stage for something of a cosmic light show last night will a bright fireball crossing the night sky at around 11pm. The spectacle was the result of a fragment of comet hitting the earth's atmosphere at a speed of approximately 95,000km/h. Despite the fact that the fireball was only visible for a short period of time it was widely reported on social media.
Sports facilities begin peak season hours - 8th Jul 2016
During July and August Nerja's sporting installations will change to different opening times to meet demand. The Enrique López Cuenca stadium on the other side of the N-340 to the Nerja Club Hotel will be open from 9am until 1pm and again from 6:30pm until 10:30pm, Monday to Saturday. The indoor sports centre which overlooks the stadium will keep the same morning hours as the stadium but open from 7pm in the evenings until 11pm at night. Finally the polideportivo complex just a short walk from the health centre will be available for use from 9am until 2pm and from 5pm until 11pm. The complex will also open on Sundays albeit one hour later.
Guardia civil catches foreign fugitive - 7th Jul 2016
It was revealed today that Guardia Civil officers recently detained a foreign national in Nerja who had fled from his native country to evade justice. The individual, who was identified only as M.K and is a Moroccan citizen, is wanted in connection with drug smuggling offences, specifically the transportation of cannabis through the port of Tangier to Spain and other European countries. The man is now awaiting a date to be put before the Spanish supreme court to begin the extradition proceedings which will see him returned to his country.
Lifeguard injured after watch tower collapses - 6th Jul 2016
Earlier this week one of Nerja's lifeguards was injured when the watch tower which he was using collapsed from under him. The twenty three year old suffered bruising to a leg but was otherwise unharmed in the incident which took place at around midday on Burriana beach. For obvious safety reasons the authorities have now began inspecting the numerous lifeguard towers along the municipality's beaches before they can enter back into service.
Local athletes selected for European championship - 4th Jul 2016
Four of Nerja's young athletes have been selected to represent the country in the coming European youth championship to be held from the 14th July in Tbilisi, Georgia. The Nerja club, with four selected athletes, was almost the best represented club in the country being surpassed only by the Playas de Castellón club which had one more member selected. The four Nerja club members are Isiro Leyva, Ouassim Oumaiz, Jesús Gómez and Raquel Moreno.
Tourist season hours begin in local shops - 1st Jul 2016
From today until the 15th September Nerja's shops will be able to remain open on Sundays and bank holidays thanks to a relaxing of trading laws in areas of the country with particularly high tourist activity. The change allows businesses in the 700 designated areas complete freedom to open as they see fit during their busiest time of the year. The law applies to independent shops as well as the big chains such as supermarkets and fashion outlets with the nearby El Ingenio shopping centre remaining open this weekend.
Tiger mosquito found in Nerja - 29th Jun 2016
Investigators from the animal pathology faculty of the university of Zaragoza in collaboration with various investigatory institutions have confirmed that the tiger mosquito commonly found in south east Asia has been discovered in large parts of the Costa del Sol, including Nerja. The mosquito which is smaller and more aggressive than the more common varieties has been linked with the spread of some illnesses and inflicts a more painful and persistent bite. Aside from taking the usual precautions against mosquitoes residents and visitors should remove any stagnant water that may have collected in buckets, pots or bird baths which provides an excellent breading ground.
Ainhoa Arteta opens Caves music festival - 27th Jun 2016
Last Friday the fifty seventh Nerja Caves music and dance festival began with a sold out performance by soprano Ainhoa Arteta. The concert which is the first of five to be held in the caverns also included singers Paco Rabal and Rafael Alberti and was described as unforgettable by attendees. The next performance in the caves will be by the Jorge Pardo Quartet on Saturday 2nd July at 10pm.
Artists unite for joint exhibition - 23rd Jun 2016
A new art exhibition opened in Nerja today at the Calle Cristo municipal hall near the Balcón de Europa. The exhibition, which includes works by the three local artists Pedro Zayas, Neringa Jure and Tadas Juras, is a collection of paintings, sculptures and photographs which all explore various aspects of life in Andalucia. Each artist has taken their inspiration from different aspects of the region whether that be the tranquillity of rural life, the textures of common materials or the picture postcard villages associated with the area. The exhibition will be open until the 9th July both mornings and evenings.
Weekend meditation at the Nerja Caves - 21st Jun 2016
This Saturday the Foro ACCE organisation will once again hold an outdoor guided meditation class in the gardens of the Nerja Caves complex. The class, which is open to all those who wish to take part, will begin at 18:30 and will be followed by an alternative jam session to welcome the summer season. The organisers recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing and taking something to eat and drink.
Vicious attack leads to prison sentence - 17th Jun 2016
Two individuals involved in the assault of a local police officer in Nerja in 2011 received prison sentences today at a hearing in the Málaga provincial court. The two men, who are father and son, received sentences of seven months and four years respectively due to a routine traffic infringement which escalated into a vicious attack by the younger man. The victim, who suffered a broken nose and required twelve stitches received just over €6,000 in damages from the pair whose appeal against the sentence was rejected.
