Construction plans for Los Huertos car park - 16th Mar 2017
The owners of the large Los Huertos car park in the centre of Nerja which also serves as the main site for the annual Nerja Feria have submitted an application to the Nerja town hall to make changes to the lands legal classification. They're seeking to change its status to that of urban land which would allow them restart a earlier housing development plan which would see the 36,000m site turned into 290 residential houses.
Nerja athlete wins Miami beach half marathon - 14th Mar 2017
Local athlete Francisco Urbano has won this years Miami beach half marathon which was held earlier this month on the 4th. El Pulguilla as he is known locally crossed the line in one hour fifteen minutes almost four minutes ahead of Timothy Nichols who finished in second place. Following the race the winner remarked on how important it was for him that a Nerja athletics club jersey won such a race in the US.
Fire fighters protest over delays to new fire station - 13th Mar 2017
Last wednesday fire fighters from the provincial fire fighters association based in Nerja held a protest on the Burriana roundabout outside their current makeshift headquarters. The protest took place on the day of the services patron saint to draw attention to the considerable delays to the completion of the new fire service complex on the Frigiliana road. The new facility is almost complete with only 5% of the works still to carry out yet has stood in the same state for over a year with work paralysed due miscommunication between the various public bodies which are co-financing the project. The fire fighters point out that their current temporary home does not fulfil the minimum health and safety requirements and that a solution to the ongoing problem must be found.
Police tribute band give concert - 9th Mar 2017
Fans of the 80's band the The Police are in for a treat this evening with the tribute band The Cops playing in the Nerja Cultural Centre this evening. The set will include the best known songs of the group including Message in a bottle, Roxanne and Every breath you take. The concert starts at 9pm with entrance costing €10.
Guardia civil makes contraband tobacco seizure - 7th Mar 2017
It was announced this week that officers of the Guardia Civil from Velez-Málaga and Algarrobo had seized 21,000 boxes of contraband cigarettes in Nerja. The discovery came as part of a joint operation between the traffic and customs departments which lead to the stopping of a suspects van on the A7 motorway as it passed through the municipality. The operation was carried out in mid February and lead to the arrest of one individual and the seizure of the cigarettes along with €1000 in cash.
Cello concert at the cultural centre - 3rd Mar 2017
This evening at 9pm the third concert in Nerja's first classical music festival will begin at the cultural centre. This concert conducted by Santiago de la Riva with soprano Hasmik Nahapetyan and cellists from all over AndalucÃa performing will include pieces from Couperin, Popper, Ortega and Villa-Lobos. Entrance costs €15 with tickets available from the centres ticket office.
Caterpillar season warning to residents - 1st Mar 2017
The national association for pest control companies (ANECPLA) has reminded residents living in close proximity to pine trees of the beginning of this years processional caterpillar season. The pine processionary caterpillars (thaumetopoea pityoca) characteristically travel in long, nose to tail lines and can be harmful to people due to the irritation caused from the hairs covering their bodies. Effects typically take the form of rashes and eye irritation with individuals who are allergic potentially going into anaphylactic shock. The association recommends residents and visitors be on the look out for the caterpillar processions, particularly those with pets and small children.
Nerja runs highest earthquake risk in the Axarquia - 24th Feb 2017
According to information recently published by the Málaga provincial council Nerja is one of the municipalities at highest risk of experiencing an earthquake in the AxarquÃa area. The information comes as the council publishes a new infographic showing the Axarquia region split into three zones based on risk of seismic activity. The information is intended to assist the municipal authorities with planning for emergency incidents and is accompanied by extra information regarding damage reduction measures related to urban planning and building design.
Upgrades approved for coastal walkways - 22nd Feb 2017
Last week the councillor for the environment of the Junta de Andalucia delivered to Rosa Arrabal the mayoress of Nerja the final approval for the latest updates to Nerja's coastal walkways. The updates come as part of a Costa del Sol wide initiative to provide a continuous 200km route for walkers and cyclists along the coast from Manilva all the way to Nerja. These latest works in Nerja will be in the areas of the Rio Chillar and Rio Seco.
Sign up period opens for Dia del Pedal 2017 - 20th Feb 2017
The period to sign up for Nerja's 29th Dia del Pedal is now open. The event, as in previous years, will take place on the 28th of February but on this occasion will start and end on the Balcón de Europa following the usual circular route. Anybody interested in taking part in one of the towns largest annual sporting events can sign up in the municipal sports office in Calle Carlos Millón between 10am and 2pm.
Carnival program now available - 16th Feb 2017
Yesterday at the town hall councillors Patricia Gutiérrez and Sara Rivas presented the program of events for this year's Nerja Carnival which starts on Thursday 23rd of February. As in previous years the four day program is packed full of competitions, concerts and processions so if you'd like to find out more take a look at our carnival page for more information.
Residents unite against animal mistreatment - 15th Feb 2017
The local animal charity APA Nerja which was set up in 2015 to help abandoned and mistreated animals has started a petition in recent days to seize a dog from a well known animal abuser who frequents the municipality. The individual, who has been seen here on and off over a period of years first came to the attention of the authorities in June 2015 and is once again on the radar thanks to the action taken by the volunteers at APA Nerja. So far the petition which the organisers hope will compel the police to act, has 2,500 signatures and is still growing.
